Balbirnie House Wedding Photography – Steph & Graeme’s Long Gallery Ceremony

When couples plan a wedding at Balbirnie House, one of the biggest questions is often how the venue works during unpredictable Scottish weather. Steph and Graeme’s wedding in May was the perfect example of why Balbirnie House is such a strong choice in every season. Throughout the day the weather changed constantly, with sunshine one minute and rain the next, but the venue adapted beautifully to every part of the celebration.

Their elegant indoor ceremony in the Long Gallery was full of emotion, laughter, and genuinely memorable moments, from Graeme becoming emotional as Steph walked down the aisle with her son to the unexpected ring search during the ceremony itself.

As a Balbirnie House wedding photographer, I always enjoy photographing weddings here because the venue works incredibly well for relaxed documentary wedding photography no matter the conditions outside. The combination of elegant interiors, soft natural light, and beautiful grounds gives couples so much flexibility throughout the day without needing to compromise their plans because of the weather.

If you’re considering an outdoor ceremony instead, you might also enjoy this outdoor Balbirnie House wedding with a completely different atmosphere and setting.
It’s also one of those Scottish wedding venues where guests naturally spread between indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the day, helping create lots of relaxed interactions and genuine moments to photograph.

Why Balbirnie House Works So Well for Indoor Weddings
One of the biggest advantages of getting married at Balbirnie House is how flexible the venue feels throughout the day. Even with rain on and off for most of Steph and Graeme’s wedding, nothing ever felt restricted or limited because there were so many good indoor and outdoor options available.
The Long Gallery works beautifully for indoor ceremonies, especially for couples wanting an elegant setting without the ceremony feeling overly formal. The room has soft natural light, neutral tones, and enough space for guests to feel comfortable while still keeping the atmosphere intimate.

As a Scottish wedding photographer, venues like this are always exciting to photograph because changing weather conditions naturally create variety throughout the day. During breaks in the rain, guests gathered outside with drinks while children ran around the grounds and garden games appeared across the lawn. Then, only a few minutes later, everyone would move back indoors as another shower passed through.
One of the things I love most about photographing weddings here is that there are always good portrait locations available no matter what the weather decides to do.
The Long Gallery also worked perfectly for family photographs, bridal party photos, and portraits with Steph and Graeme’s three dogs while the rain continued outside.
Balbirnie House Wedding Photography – The Wedding Day
Morning Preparations at Balbirnie House
The morning began in the bridal suite, where Steph and her bridesmaids spent the morning getting ready together before the ceremony. The atmosphere felt calm and relaxed, with plenty of excitement building as the morning went on.

The bridal suite at Balbirnie House is always one of my favourite spaces to photograph during preparations because the large windows keep the room bright and natural even during darker weather outside. Throughout the morning there were lots of smaller moments unfolding naturally between the bridesmaids and family while Steph got ready in the bridal suite before the ceremony began.

Meanwhile, Graeme spent the morning getting ready at home alongside Steph’s son and his best man before the three of them arrived together at the venue later in the morning. Just before the ceremony, Steph shared a first look with her son before he walked her down the aisle in the Long Gallery. Graeme wore a really distinctive tartan outfit with tartan trousers rather than a more traditional kilt style, which suited the elegant feel of the wedding perfectly.

There were also some lovely personal touches throughout the day. A piper welcomed guests as they arrived at the venue before later leading everyone into the speeches before the meal, while a live singer performed during the ceremony and throughout the drinks reception as guests mingled indoors between the changing weather outside.
Another highlight of the day was the illustrator creating paintings during the wedding, with guests constantly stopping to watch the artwork develop throughout the afternoon.
A Long Gallery Ceremony Full of Emotion
Before the ceremony began, Steph shared a first look with her son before the two of them walked down the aisle together in the Long Gallery. As soon as Graeme saw Steph entering the ceremony, the emotion on his face said everything. Moments like this are one of the reasons I love documentary wedding photography so much because nothing needs to be directed or staged. The reactions happen naturally and become some of the most meaningful photographs from the entire day.

The ceremony itself included one unexpected moment that nobody saw coming. When it came time for the rings, the best man realised he didn’t actually have them. After a few seconds of confusion, guests quickly discovered the rings had been hidden under one of the chairs as a surprise prank, leading to everyone searching around the ceremony room laughing before someone finally brought the rings back to the front. It completely changed the atmosphere in the room in the best possible way and became one of those moments everyone will probably still talk about years later.

Following the ceremony, the rain meant the confetti photos, family portraits, bridal
party photographs, and photos with Steph and Graeme’s three dogs all took place inside the Long Gallery rather than outdoors.

The Long Gallery worked beautifully for these parts of the day, especially for the bridal party photographs alongside the brown bridesmaid dresses which suited the elegant interiors of the venue perfectly. The neutral tones throughout the room complemented the styling really naturally and gave the photographs a timeless, relaxed feel.
During one of the dry breaks before the meal, we also managed to head outside briefly for some fun photographs around the front of the venue. One of the funniest moments came when Graeme had the idea for a drone photograph where some of the wedding guests threw him into the air while I captured everything from above. It completely matched the relaxed energy of the day and ended up being one of the most memorable photographs from the wedding.

One of the best things about Balbirnie House wedding photography is how well the venue works during unpredictable Scottish weather. Nothing ever feels like a backup option because there are so many elegant indoor and outdoor locations that work naturally throughout the day.
Speeches, Portraits & Scottish Weather
After the ceremony, guests moved through the venue while the weather continued changing throughout the afternoon with alternating sunshine and rain showers.
During the brighter moments, guests gathered outside with drinks while children ran around the grounds playing games before everyone headed back inside again as the rain returned.
The speeches were introduced by the piper leading Steph and Graeme into the Ballroom before around forty minutes of emotional stories, laughter, and tears from family and friends.

It was very obvious throughout the day how loved Steph and Graeme are by the people around them. The atmosphere never felt forced or overly formal, just relaxed, emotional, and full of genuinely happy moments between everyone there.

After the meal, the weather finally settled enough for us to head outside around the grounds for couple portraits.

We used several different locations around Balbirnie House including the front of the building, the driveway and gardens. One of the biggest advantages of this venue is how many different portrait options are available within a short walking distance, making it easy to adapt quickly around changing weather conditions.
Steph and Graeme were an absolute joy to photograph during this part of the day. The portraits felt relaxed and natural the whole time, with lots of laughter between them rather than anything overly posed.
First Dance & Evening Celebrations
The evening celebrations began with Steph and Graeme’s first dance before the dance floor quickly filled as the band started playing later in the evening.

Like the rest of the day, the atmosphere stayed relaxed and full of energy from start to finish, with guests moving constantly between dancing, conversations and enjoying the final part of the celebration together.
For me, this is always one of the best parts of documentary wedding photography - photographing people completely relaxed in the moment without thinking too much about the camera.
Steph and Graeme’s wedding was such a brilliant example of how well Balbirnie House works in every kind of Scottish weather while still feeling elegant, calm, and genuinely enjoyable for everyone involved.
