Alannah and Robbie’s twilight wedding at Eskmills was a really lovely, relaxed day spent with their family and friends. Eskmills is in Musselburgh, East Lothian, just outside Edinburgh, and it’s a great setting if you’re planning something a bit more laid-back and later in the day.

Twilight weddings are becoming more and more popular, and it’s easy to see why. The later start means no early morning rush, and the whole day feels a bit more natural, with more space to just enjoy time with your guests.

Their ceremony started at 4pm, so it was still bright when everything began. It only started getting darker later on, around the time of the cake cutting and first dance, which gave a really nice transition from day into evening.

It felt very personal from the start. Their young son brought the rings during the ceremony, which was such a nice moment, and their children were part of the day throughout. After the ceremony, they all walked out together as a family of four for confetti, which made it feel even more meaningful.

We headed outside for confetti, group photos, and a few family moments. It was a windy day, and although it was the middle of April, it felt quite cold, but everyone just got on with it and made the most of the time outside.

We also took a few couple portraits while we were out there, keeping it short and relaxed before heading back in ahead of the speeches. Later in the evening, after the meal, we stepped out again for a few more photos in a different spot, just for a few minutes before they returned to their guests.

Why Twilight Weddings Work So Well

A twilight wedding is a great option if you want a more relaxed and less structured day.

Starting later in the afternoon means there’s no early morning rush, and the day feels more focused on the parts that matter most. Even though the overall timeline is shorter, it often feels more relaxed because there are fewer formalities and less moving between different parts of the day.

That usually means you spend more of your time simply being with your guests, rather than following a tight schedule.

From a photography point of view, twilight weddings work really well. You still get natural light for your ceremony and a few portraits, and then the evening brings a different atmosphere once it gets darker.

Planning a Twilight Wedding at Eskmills – FAQs

What is a twilight wedding?

A twilight wedding usually starts later in the day, often in the afternoon or early evening, with the ceremony followed by a shorter reception. It focuses more on the celebration rather than a full-day schedule.

What time does a twilight wedding ceremony usually start?

Most twilight weddings start between 3pm and 5pm. This wedding began at 4pm, which worked well as there was still daylight for the ceremony and photos before moving into the evening.

Is half-day photography enough for a twilight wedding?

In most cases, yes. Coverage from the ceremony through to the first dances is usually enough to capture the full story of the day without needing a full-day package.

Is Eskmills a good venue for a twilight wedding?

Yes, it works really well. The spaces are close together, and everything flows easily, which suits a shorter, more relaxed timeline.

Can you still get good photos with a later wedding?

Definitely. You still have daylight for key moments, and the evening adds a different feel to the photos once it gets darker.
